Introduction

Founded in 2013, the South African Birth Photographers Association (SABPA) is the recognised professional body for accredited birth photographers across South Africa.

SABPA exists to protect parents, support healthcare institutions, and uphold professional, ethical, and safety standards in birth photography. Our work ensures that every birth photographer entering a clinical or birth environment operates with accountability, discretion, and respect for medical care.

Our History

When SABPA was founded, birth photography was largely unregulated and unrecognised in South Africa. Many hospitals did not allow photographers in the birth space, and there were no formal standards or guidelines for practice.

Over the years, SABPA has:

  • Established formal accreditation standards and ethical codes of conduct

  • Built collaborative relationships with hospitals and healthcare professionals

  • Developed training and guidance to prepare photographers for clinical environments

  • Elevated birth photography as a profession recognised by parents, hospitals, and the wider community

Today, SABPA-accredited photographers operate under rigorous standards, giving all stakeholders confidence in the integrity, safety, and professionalism of their work.

Our Role in the Industry

SABPA serves as the central authority connecting three critical stakeholders:

  1. Parents — ensuring access to photographers who meet professional, ethical, and safety standards, providing peace of mind and trust.

  2. Hospitals and healthcare institutions — offering clear accreditation, policy alignment, and guidance to integrate professional photography safely into clinical care.

  3. Photographers — providing recognition, guidance, and accountability, fostering professionalism across the industry.

Through these roles, SABPA has formalised birth photography as a recognised, respected profession in South Africa, protecting vulnerable patients while maintaining the integrity of the work.

Professional Standards & Accreditation

SABPA accreditation reflects readiness to work in clinical birth environments. To become accredited, photographers must:

  • Meet defined experience and skill criteria

  • Successfully complete the SABPA Entry Assessment

  • Formally commit to our Code of Conduct and ethical standards

  • Maintain ongoing accountability to association guidelines

Our independent medical advisory board, composed of healthcare professionals, ensures that these standards align with hospital protocols, patient safety, and clinical best practices.

Our Values

  • Safety & Respect: Every photographer works within the boundaries of hospital policies and patient consent.

  • Professionalism & Accountability: Accreditation requires ongoing adherence to ethical and operational standards.

  • Collaboration & Trust: SABPA fosters cooperative relationships between parents, hospitals, and photographers.

  • Excellence in Practice: Continuous professional development ensures photographers maintain high standards and clinical awareness.

Our Impact

Since our founding, SABPA has played a key role in elevating birth photography across South Africa. By establishing standards, accreditation, and hospital collaboration, we have:

  • Increased trust and acceptance of birth photographers in hospitals

  • Provided parents with confidence that their birth stories are documented responsibly

  • Strengthened professional recognition for photographers across the country

Through these efforts, SABPA has helped shape birth photography into a credible, regulated, and respected profession nationally.
