How Many Births Should I Book and How Much Should I Charge as a Birth Photographer?
Two of the most practical questions every aspiring birth photographer asks are how much to charge and how many clients to take on each month. Getting both of these right from the outset is essential — not just for your business, but for the sustainability of the industry as a whole.
How Much Should I Charge for Birth Photography?
Pricing in birth photography is determined by experience, location and the scope of service you offer. As a general guide, SABPA recommends the following:
Photographers who are starting out should charge from R6,000 per birth. As your experience, reputation and service offering grow, your pricing should reflect that. Our most experienced photographers charge upwards of R19,000 per birth, depending on their location and what their packages include.
It is worth noting that pricing does vary by region. Photographers based in larger cities like Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town will generally command higher rates than those in smaller towns — and that is entirely appropriate given the difference in market and cost of living.
What Affects Your Pricing?
Before you set your rates, take time to consider what your service actually includes. A birth photography booking can range from photography only, through to a full package combining a maternity shoot, the birth itself, a fresh 48 session (photographing your client and baby in hospital the day after birth) and a newborn shoot. Each of these additions increases the value you are delivering and should be reflected in your pricing accordingly.
Think carefully about the kind of photographer and business you want to be. Are you offering a streamlined, focused birth photography service? Or do you want to build a more comprehensive offering that walks families through the entire journey from pregnancy to newborn? Neither approach is wrong — but knowing where you want to position yourself will shape your packages, your pricing and your reputation.
What we do caution strongly against is undercharging. Pricing your services too low does not just affect your own business — it undermines the perceived value of birth photography across the industry and makes it harder for every photographer to charge what their work is worth.
Is There a Price Difference Between Natural Birth and C-Section?
No — and we actively encourage all SABPA photographers to price both equally. When you take on a birth photography client you are committing to documenting their birth regardless of how it unfolds. A client who plans a natural birth may end up with an emergency caesarean section. A planned C-section may still involve hours of labour beforehand.
Emergency caesarean sections in particular can be one of the most demanding scenarios a birth photographer faces. When a mom goes into labour and the decision is made to move to theatre, the medical team moves fast — within an hour in many cases. The gynaecologist and anaesthetists will not wait for a photographer, even at the client’s request. You need to be close, prepared and ready to move at any time of the day or night.
Committing to a client means committing to their birth — however and whenever it happens.
How Many Births Should I Book Per Month?
SABPA recommends booking between two and four births per month. For most photographers, two to three is the sweet spot. Four is manageable but demanding — and we would not recommend exceeding that number.
The reason for this is simple: a birth booking is not just the birth itself. When you factor in a maternity shoot, the birth, a fresh 48 session and a newborn shoot — plus the editing, client communication and the fact that you are on call throughout your client’s due period — the workload per client is significant.
You cannot overbook or double book. You do not know exactly when your client will go into labour, and when she does, you need to be available without exception. This is why pricing your work correctly matters so much — two to four well-priced clients per month is a sustainable and professional business model.
Building a Business Worth Being Proud Of
Birth photography is both a calling and a business. The photographers who build lasting, respected careers in this industry are those who are clear on their values, consistent in their quality and deliberate about the experience they create for their clients.
Take time to think about where you want to be positioned, what your service will look and feel like, and what reputation you want to build. It is a process of growing and learning — and SABPA is here to support you every step of the way.
