Choosing the Right Birth Photographer: Expert Advice | SABPA

Asking the Right Questions

When meeting with a potential birth photographer, asking the right questions can make all the difference. Preparing beforehand will help ensure you find the ideal professional to capture these precious memories.

We asked Leonie Jordaan, founder and owner of Soulburst Photography and a registered SABPA member, to share some essential tips:

“When looking at a potential photographer’s website, you will find that one or more of them resonates with you and your needs. Trust your gut when evaluating their work and style. If your preferred photographer is slightly outside your budget, consider cutting costs elsewhere to afford their services. The birth of your baby is a once-in-a-lifetime event that cannot be recreated. You need someone who can adapt quickly and capture even the most challenging shots.” – Leonie Jordaan

Key Questions to Ask a Birth Photographer

Tracey Baard, also a registered SABPA member, adds the following questions to your checklist when meeting a potential photographer:

Is the photographer familiar with the hospital where your birth will take place?

Are they located near the birthing center?

Do they have a backup photographer in case of emergencies, and who will that be?

Can they drop everything when the call comes in, and do they have support structures in place to accommodate this?

Is the doctor comfortable with the photographer being present, and have they worked together before?

“It’s important to look at reviews too. A word-of-mouth recommendation can be incredibly helpful.” – Tracey Baard

Why Hire a Registered SABPA Photographer?

All three professional photographers emphasized the importance of choosing a SABPA-registered photographer.

“Your photographer must understand the SABPA Code of Conduct and adhere to it.” – Adette Ferreira

“Hiring a registered photographer ensures they’ve undergone training, understand medical room protocols, and know how to collaborate with healthcare professionals. This guarantees the best possible outcome in any situation.” – Leonie Jordaan

Professional Insights

We also asked our photographers for their golden rules and personal philosophies:

“My golden rule is, rather 10 hours early than 10 minutes late!” – Tracey Baard

“As a birth photographer, I am passionate about what I do! It’s important that my clients feel safe, understood, and confident their privacy is respected.” – Adette Ferreira

“After taking a few shots, I like to show the client one or two. For a mother in labor, surrendering control can create anxiety. Showing them they look great and that I’m capturing the important moments helps bring a sense of calm.” – Leonie Jordaan
