Choosing the Right Birth Photographer: A Guide for Expectant Parents
Discovering you are expecting brings with it a wonderful wave of excitement, planning and preparation. Among the many decisions you will make in the months ahead, choosing the right birth photographer is one that deserves careful thought. This is not a session that can be rescheduled or recreated — your birth happens once, and the person you choose to document it matters enormously.

Finding a Photographer Whose Work Speaks to You
Your search should begin with portfolios. Spend time looking at the work of different photographers and pay attention to how their images make you feel. As Leonie Jordaan, a former SABPA accredited photographer, put it:
“When looking at a potential photographer’s website, you will often have a gut feeling when looking at their work and style. That feeling is worth trusting. The birth of your baby is something that can’t be reshot or recreated. You need someone who can quickly improvise and adapt — hire someone whose portfolio shows they are able to get the more difficult shots.”
If the photographer whose work moves you most is slightly outside your budget, it is worth considering whether adjustments elsewhere could make it work. Birth photography is one of the few investments from this season of life that will grow in value with every passing year.
What to Ask When Meeting a Potential Birth Photographer
Before committing to a photographer, a consultation — whether in person or online — is essential. Come prepared with questions. Here is what our photographers recommend covering:
Is the photographer familiar with the hospital or birthing centre where you plan to give birth? Knowing the space, the staff and the protocols makes a significant difference on the day.
Are they located close enough to reach you quickly? Births move fast and proximity matters, particularly for emergency caesarean sections where the window can be very short.
Do they have a backup photographer? Life is unpredictable and your photographer should have a trusted colleague on standby should anything prevent them from attending.
Do they have the support structures in place to drop everything when your call comes in? Being on call is a serious commitment and your photographer needs to be genuinely available throughout your due period.
Is your doctor familiar and comfortable with your chosen photographer? A photographer who has an existing relationship with your gynaecologist or has worked in your hospital before is a significant advantage.
Have you read their reviews? As Tracey puts it — “A word of mouth recommendation can be really helpful.”
Why SABPA Accreditation Matters
All three photographers we consulted were emphatic on one point: choose a SABPA accredited photographer. Adette explains why:
“Hiring someone that has been registered means that you can be assured that the photographer has been through basic training, understands the code of conduct and knows their place in a medical room. Hiring someone who knows how to work together with medical staff is hiring someone who is going to give you the best possible outcome in any situation.”
SABPA accreditation means your photographer has completed formal training, passed an examination on the rules and regulations of the birth space, and committed to a strict code of conduct that protects your privacy, your dignity and your experience.

Leonie Jordaan, drawing on her background in psychology, shared an insight that has stayed with us:
“Something I have found really helpful is after taking a few shots, to show the client one or two so they can see what they look like. For a mother in labour, control is something that has to be completely surrendered. Reassuring them that they look great and that I am capturing the important moments gives them some form of control and calmness.”
